Urban Menace (1999) dir. Albert Pyun

Urban Menace stars rappers Snoop Dogg, Big Pun, Ice-T and Fat Joe and contains no plot worth mentioning.

The “film” makes Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) look like it was directed by Orson Welles – honestly. It exhibits no filmmaking ability whatsoever, is recorded in video with an unbearably horrible blue-green filter, not to mention the countless slow-motion and freeze-frame effects that contribute absolutely nothing. The “state of the art visual effects” advertised on the DVD box consist of poor CGI flames superimposed over the scene. All of the dialogue and acting is abysmal, and is puncuated with brainless, offensive, insulting narration by Ice-T. Of particular note is Big Pun who can barely talk, let alone act. He mumbles inaudibly and is obviously reading his lines off an auto-cue behind the camera.

A lot of bad films receive exaggerated comments but this film is truly, fundamentally and constantly, offensive to the eyes and ears. It makes me wish that the Internet Movie Database had the facility for voting a 0 for films because this film really does not deserve its 1 out of 10. In fact, it has made me go through and give all my previous “1 out of 10 films” a 2. This leads me to actually recommend the film to anyone brave enough as it will make you realise just how bad filmmaking can be and will make you appreciate the good films so much more.
